Cridge Club for Seniors

Around the church live thousands of seniors who have come to Victoria later in life. They have often found it hard to make new friends; in their apartments no pets are allowed and the only person they can talk to is the custodian of the building or the checkout lady at the corner store. With folk like that in mind, in 2003 the Cridge Club was launched in our Community Ministry Centre. Every Thursday (except during the summer) it provides an excellent three-course lunch with beverage, followed by a sing-along, and then a talk by a professional on topics of particular interest to seniors. One week, a physician will tackle a subject like "Preventing Falls" or “New approaches to Alzheimer’s”; next week a lawyer may discuss "Power of attorney" or a historian “The Helmcken family”; the following week a minister could show the way to "Aging with joy," and the fourth week is usually reserved for armchair travel. Slide shows on the program have been "High Canadian Arctic," and "Indians of the Amazon."

The schedule for the coming season is as follows:

Cridge Club Winter Speakers Schedule (pdf)

The program has proved to be very popular, and especially during the winter one has to be there in good time to be sure of a seat. A donation of $6 is suggested to defray the expenses of the meal.

The Cridge Club is a happy and stimulating place, where people feel at home right away and where they make friends.

In addition, the Cridge Club lays on a Classical Hymn Sing on the first Sunday afternoon of the month. There, encouraged by our superb pianist, we sing with gusto such wonderful hymns like “How Great Thou Art” and “What a Friend we have in Jesus”. On the third Sunday afternoon of the month there is “The Forum”, a circle where we discuss issues with a spiritual dimension, such as “Prayer” or “Peace of Mind”.
