Cridge
Club for Seniors
Given
our downtown location, it is not surprising that thousands of senior citizens
live within a few blocks of the centre. We know firsthand, of seniors whose
view from their single room or small apartment is of another apartment block.
No pets allowed, and often the only person they can talk to is the building
custodian or the checkout person at the corner store.
The
Cridge Club was launched at the centre on March 13, 2003. It now provides
a weekly event where seniors can get a excellent three-course lunch, followed
by a sing-along, and then a talk by a professional on topics of particular
interest to them. One week, a physician will tackle a subject like "falls
and how to prevent them," next week, a lawyer may discuss "powers
of attorney,", the following week, a minister could show the way
to
"aging with joy," and the fourth week is reserved for armchair
travel. Slide shows on the program are "high Canadian arctic,"
"Jordan and Egypt," and "Indians of the Amazon." Cridge

The program is interesting, fun, and of practical help. No doubt it will become the highlight of the week for many seniors, and as time goes by it will become a place where they feel at home and meet their friends.
