Church of Our Lord, affectionately known by its acronym COOL, is one of the oldest church congregations in Victoria. Faithfully serving Victoria since 1874, we combine a respect for the rich heritage of our past with relevance for all generations today.
Beautiful worship, together with a friendly atmosphere and warm loving spirit, continue to attract many to come and discover the new life which Jesus offers.
We are excited about what God is doing amongst us and would love you to come and visit at one of the Sunday Services or weekday activities.
We believe that everyone in the Body of Christ is a minister, but we also have a wonderful group of leaders who enjoy working together in unity as they exercise an oversight ministry.
Our
Rector, Dr. Rod Ellis,
was born and raised in South Africa and together with his wife Lynne, has
been actively involved in ministry since 1977. He has studied and trained
at the Universities of Natal (South Africa), and Nottingham (U.K.) and has
a doctorate from Fuller Theological Seminary (U.S.A.) He has lectured at
Bible Colleges, and has a background in counselling. Rod and Lynne have
three children, Jonathan (married to Becky), Davina and Lisa. Having emigrated
from South Africa in 1993, they are all now Canadian citizens.
The church
operates under the leadership of the pastors and two groups of elders: The
Parish Council which is formed for the spiritual guidance of the congregation;
and the Vestry which deals with the administration of the church's business.
However, we are all ministers who serve the Body of Christ.

Rod at the school that
bears his name in Malawi - June 2007
"Know and love our Lord, to go and grow His Church".
This statement includes the following;
1. "Church" and "Our Lord" - reflecting our name.
2. "Know" implies both a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and the need for teaching and training in discipleship.
3. "Love" expresses both our love relationship with God in worship, as well as our fellowship with one another in the Body of Christ.
4. "Go" is the word given by God to his people to obey him in becoming pro-active.
5. "Growing the church" encompasses many things; from growing up in maturity and in our relationship with God, to growing together in our relationships with one another, to growing in serving one another in ministry, to growing out in our relationship with the world through serving in mission.
This is
very much in keeping with the original vision of the church. When Bishop
Edward Cridge founded The Church of our Lord in 1874, he was already known
in the settlement of Victoria as a man who lived out his considerable faith
in God.
Not
only did he and his wife care for orphans, which was the foundation for
the extensive minstry now known as the Cridge Centre for the Family, he
was the first inspector of schools in Victoria, was the founder of the Royal
Jubilee Hospital, and involved in many other great projects. Further on
you can read about the existing outreach programs currently active in The
Church of our Lord.
Our Vision/Mission is to continue to grow into the visible and vital force in the way the Cridges so beautifully exemplified, and to serve and impact the people of this city with the love of Christ.
As part of our beliefs, we subscribe to the values and principles of the following;
Reformed - as having our roots in the English Reformation and including such principles as the priesthood of all believers, salvation through the finished work of Christ on the Cross, and the authority of The Bible. We would also see reformation as an ongoing reality, as we need to be constantly reformed, transformed and renewed through the ministry of the Word and Holy Spirit.
Episcopal - which literally means overseer, shows our belief in the exercising of strong leadership in the Church.. This includes the oversight of the local churches by Presbyters, meaning Elders, and the oversight of Diocese, meaning groups of churches in regional areas, by Bishops/Episcopoi /Overseers.
Liturgical - simply means the order and form of service, something which all churches do have. We follow a written liturgical structure which is rooted in scripture and gives order to the service, but this is also combined with different expressions of musical style and worship, giving a wonderful diversity and richness. Our worship services offer a unique blend of traditional and contemporary liturgy and music, balancing reverence and joyful celebration. You will also enjoy the warmth and friendliness of a loving church family.
Evangelical
-
by which we mean, that as sinners who fall short of God’s perfection, we
believe in the need for a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord
and Saviour,
the
authority of the Word of God as governing our doctrine and as our guide
for life, and the commission to go and spread the gospel/good news of Jesus
Christ, both in our immediate communities, and in all the world.
Charismatic - we are invited to be filled with God’s charis, meaning grace, and to manifest the charismata, meaning gifts of the Holy Spirit in our lives. God has equipped and gifted his whole church to exercise the same ministry of Jesus in the world, with the renewing power, authority, and graciousness of the Holy Spirit as He enables us to live out our faith.
The Church
of Our Lord is a member of the Reformed
Episcopal Church, which is rooted in the English Reformation with a
commitment to the Book
of Common Prayer,
an
Episcopal form of church leadership, and affirming the Nicene Creed as a
basis of our beliefs. Canada is divided into the Diocese of Eastern Canada,
and our own Diocese of Western
Canada & Alaska, with the Rt. Rev. Charles Dorrington as Bishop.
